We have made great progress on improving the nutritional value of our products, while keeping the great taste of the snacks you know and love.
Snacks can be enjoyed in moderation as part of a healthy balanced diet and active lifestyle and the Australian Government recognises this in its national dietary guidelines.1
Our product range now includes more wholegrains and nuts.
Sunbites are a delicious range of snacks that are made with the goodness of wholegrain and are seasoned with natural colours and flavours, so you can feel good about your snack choice. The range includes Sunbites Grain Waves and Sunbites Popcorn.
Sunbites Grain Waves are deliciously crispy and crunchy wholegrain wave chips that are an Australian favourite. They’re seasoned with scrumptious flavours like Sour Cream & Chives and Sweet Chilli and are perfect for daytime snacking at work, home or school, or for sharing with friends.
What’s even better is that one 28g serve provides a third of the suggested 48g Daily Target Intake for wholegrains as stated by the Grain and Legumes Nutrition Council (GLNC)2.
Sunbites Popcorn is made with the goodness of tasty wholegrain corn kernels which are cooked in hot air, not oil, and then lightly seasoned. The result is truly scrumptious popcorn that also happens to be 25% lower in fat and salt than oil popped popcorn.*
Sakata Wholegrain, gluten free rice crackers are a source of fibre (more than 2g per 25g serve) and also provide 2 serves of wholegrain (16g) in every 25g serve, as per the as per the GLNC guidance. Sakata Wholegrain rice crackers also provide a source of omega-3 from linseeds, sesame and chia seeds.
Nobby’s Nuts are an Australian favourite, as well as being a natural source of protein.

We have reduced the average amount of saturated fat across our portfolio.
From June 2011 the entire Smith's potato chips range has been cooked in sunflower and/or canola oil. This means all Smith’s potato chips contain 75% less saturated fat than when our chips were cooked in 100% palmolein oil, resulting in 1,800 tonnes of saturated fat being removed from the Australian food supply chain each year.
Sunbites Grain Waves wholegrain chips are also cooked in 100% high oleic sunflower oil. This means they contain 75% less saturated fat than potato chips cooked in palmolein oil and 30% less total fat than regular (non-fat-reduced) potato chips.
None of our products are cooked in partially hydrogenated fats and hence they contain negligible levels of trans-fatty acids.
We have reduced the sodium content per serve.
Since May 2007 we have decreased the average sodium content across our total portfolio by over 25%. The amount of sodium reduction varies from product to product, to ensure our products deliver the same great taste.
Encouraging consumers to make informed choices.
Daily Intake Guide (%DI) labelling was introduced on our snacks brands as part of industry-wide food labelling changes and is now on our entire product range. The %DI shows you what one serve of a food provides as a percentage of your overall recommended daily intake for key nutrients.
Nutritionists recommend that a sensible serve size for snacks should provide less than 600 kilojoules (143 calories)"
Responsible Marketing to Children.
In Australia & New Zealand we adhere to voluntary industry wide marketing practices which include specific guidelines for advertising to children which are consistent with our overall global strategy. We have a range of products that meet the nutrition criteria of the various State Government school canteen strategies.
We do not place vending machines in primary schools and provide a "Smart Options" range of snacks for vending machines in senior schools and health facilities.
The original and the best are now gluten free.
From October 2016, all Smith’s Crinkle Cut and Smith’s Thinly Cut potato chips manufactured by Smith’s in Australia, are gluten free. Our packaging will be changing progressively over the coming months to reflect the move to gluten free on Smith’s Crinkle Cut and Thinly Cut products. Look out for the GLUTEN FREE statement which will be on the back of the Smith’s latest packs. We recommend that you always check the packaging of your product for the most current and accurate product information.
Smith’s has achieved gluten free status through testing and validation of our seasonings, raw materials and manufacturing processes, while maintaining the great Smith’s taste and flavours you love. We follow strict industry standards that mean consumers can be confident that Smith’s products labelled ‘gluten free’ contain no detectable gluten.
