History
Doritos Corn Chips were launched into the snack food market in Australia in 1984. The brand underwent a major relaunch in 1996. This included updated packaging and significant improvements in product quality which were the result of extensive product testing and consumer research both locally and internationally. Following this relaunch, Doritos quickly became the market leading corn chip brand in Australia growing the whole corn category. New flavours and products are regularly added to the range including Doritos Tapas gourmet corn chip range and a selection of delicious dips.
How they are made
1. We Start With 100% Aussie Corn
The Smith's Snackfood Company purchases whole grain corn from selected growers throughout Australia. The corn is trucked to special storage facilities where it is cleaned prior its shipment to Smith's plants. At the plant, the corn is again cleaned, and then heated in large steam cookers that soften the corn and loosen its "pericarp", or outer skin.
2. The next Steep
The corn next is transferred to a "steep tank" to soak so that the hard pericarp is loosened. The corn is washed, then ground to produce "masa" or corn dough.
3. Roll it out and toast it
The dough is placed in special equipment that produces a thin sheet of dough. A special roller cuts the dough into the appropriate shape. The uncooked corn chips are moved through a toasting oven that eliminates excess moisture from the chip. The toasted corn chips are known as "tortillas".
4. We're cooking now
The chips are conveyed to a large cooking vat and fried at temperatures that remove more moisture and give the chips their crispness and colour. The corn chips are transported to a large rotating drum where they are flavoured with salt or seasoning.
5. The Great Finish
The seasoned chips are automatically weighed by machines, released into bags, stamped with the "Best Before" date, and packed into cartons.
