What type of oil is used in the manufacture of chips and snacks?

Traditionally, a vegetable oil, palmolein oil, has been used to manufacture most of our products. Palmolein is a vegetable oil extracted from the fruit of the palm tree.

We use high oleic sunflower oil for some of our products. High oleic sunflower oil is a special type of sunflower oil that has been designed for frying foods. It is lower in saturated fat than palmolein oil and high in monounsaturated fat.

Grain Waves wholegrain chips are cooked in 100% high oleic sunflower oil. This reduces their saturated fat content by 75% compared to chips cooked in 100% palmolein oil. They also have 25% less fat than regular potato chips.

All Smith's chips are cooked in a blend of high oleic sunflower oil and palmolein oil.

Use of high oleic sunflower oil does not affect the taste of these products.

What does the “25% reduced saturated fat" on Smith's chips mean?

To reduce the saturated fat content of Smith's chips, our potatoes are cooked in a healthier oil blend. Adding high oleic sunflower oil to palmolein oil has reduced the saturated fat level in Smith's Crinkles and Thinly Cut by 25% compared to potato chips cooked in 100% palmolein oil.
